Benton Central Falls to Lafayette Central Catholic in Midweek Matchup

Oxford, IN - April 17, 2025 Lafayette Central Catholic struck early in Wednesday’s game, scoring three runs in the top of the first. A Benton Central error plated the first run, followed by a two-run double from #3 Jackson Cain. The Bison responded in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 3-3, thanks to an RBI double by Nolan Winkler and a run-scoring single from Kaydric Tyson. LCC regained the lead in the top of the second with a two-run double by #9 Hudson Gutwein and another Benton Central error, stretching the lead to 7-3. A big fourth inning from Lafayette Central Catholic put the game out of reach. They scored seven runs on six hits, highlighted by a two-run single from #41 Brennan VanKirk, a two-run single from #30 Gus Sandberg, and a three-run single off the bat of #10 Lucas Gerkey. LCC’s #25 Vince Telenko earned the win, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) over three innings, striking out one and walking none. Nolan Winkler took the loss for Benton Central, going three innings and giving up seven runs (two earned) on four hits, with five strikeouts and four walks. Offensively, Winkler drove in two runs and went 1-for-3. Carter Fox led the Bison at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance. Lafayette Central Catholic totaled 10 hits, led by Hudson Gutwein's 3-for-4 effort out of the leadoff spot. Calvin Reisman added two hits in four at-bats, while Lucas Gerkey led the team with three RBIs. LCC showed patience at the plate, drawing eight walks and swiping four bases, including two by Brennan VanKirk. Benton Central will be back in action Friday, April 18th on the road at Rossville High School.
