Benton Central Hosts 34th Annual Dick & Rita Atha Sportsmanship Banquet A Lasting Tradition Celebrating Respect, Integrity, and the True Spirit of Competition Oxford, IN – Benton Central High School proudly continued one of its most meaningful traditions with the 34th Annual Dick & Rita Atha Sportsmanship Banquet, an event dedicated to honoring the values that define educational athletics—respect, integrity, and character. Established in honor of the late Mr. Dick Atha, a revered educator, coach, and administrator, the banquet remains a cornerstone of Benton Central Athletics. His vision of recognizing sportsmanship above all else continues to leave a lasting impact on student-athletes and school communities across the region. This year’s keynote address was delivered by Benton Central alumna Jo Ann Brouillette, a 1979 Indiana All-Star and 2004 Silver Anniversary Team honoree. Brouillette shared heartfelt reflections on her experiences as a student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of humility, respect for opponents, and the lifelong lessons learned through competition. Her message resonated deeply with those in attendance, reinforcing the values that this event was built upon. What sets the Atha Sportsmanship Banquet apart is its unique approach to recognition. Benton Central remains the only high school in Indiana to honor opposing athletes for their exemplary sportsmanship displayed during competition. Each Benton Central Athletic team selects an opponent who demonstrated outstanding character, while Benton Central student-athletes—chosen by their coaches—serve as presenters, recognizing those same qualities within their own programs. This year’s banquet featured 21 award recipients representing 14 different high schools in Indiana and Illinois, showcasing a shared commitment to sportsmanship throughout the area. “This event continues to be one of the most special traditions we have at Benton Central,” said Athletic Director Jared Hall. “It’s an opportunity to celebrate what truly matters in athletics—the way we compete, the respect we show, and the character we build along the way. Mr. Atha’s vision is alive and well through this banquet.” The Dick & Rita Atha Sportsmanship Banquet stands as a powerful reminder that the lessons learned through athletics extend far beyond wins and losses. By recognizing those who compete with honor and respect, Benton Central proudly upholds a tradition that defines the very best of high school sports.
